Women With ADHD ADD

For Women with ADHD ADD Who Want to Connect

Hi- This is my first post and I am desperately trying to get back to my old ADHD self that had all that energy. Before kids, I was very passionate and had alot of energy- such I had the hyper component which was rare in girls- which was terrible for social but great for competition. I thought it normal to stay up all night to write papers- but I did- found out in college I was dyselix. It wasn't until last year when my 7 year old was diagnosed with ADHD that I was finally able to figure out what was different about me. Previous- I was being medicated for GAD(now a sympthom of ADHD) than depression than bi-polar- nothing worked until I was given Ritalin- which slowed everything down. The one big problem I am having and continue to have is that I do not have any energy at all since my kids. I have been actively exercising for two years for it was told that that would increase energy and that has not- I usually have to take a nap afterwards. I just wish I have more energy and my current dose is 36mg Concerta- does not seem to do anything. ANd if anything my fatigue is getting worse. I started birth control 2 months ago thinking my estogen may play a part but I am wondering if I need more. I hate feeling tired all the time. Please tell me I am not alone and that some has gotten out of this

Nicole - I just now realized I missed this post! I usually read all posts.

It's very possible that you could have low thyroid. There's a simple blood test for that. I am on thyroid medication and it's helped a little but I also have other things going on as well.

It's also possible that you could have diabetes. Sometimes having children will "wake up" these things.

I suggest getting some blood work done. You may need to adjust your diet too. Talk to your doctor about your concerns as well.

I agree with Karen. Talk to you physician. There are so many causes for fatigue: hormones, thyroid, low iron, diet, etc. Your physician can do some blood work, see if you have vitamin deficiencies, thyroid issues, hormone issues, allergies, rheumatoid arthritis and many other common causes of fatigue. Once your physician has the results, together you can begin a plan to revive your energy...

It sounds like thyroid to me, too. I didn't see how old you are in your post, but if you're nearing or in perimenopause (which can span a decade or more in some cases) fluctuating hormone levels can also play havoc with your body and mind.

Ritalin never worked for me, but Adderall worked beautifully, and in the beginning it was teamed with Wellbutrin. They don't know why, but sometimes Wellbutrin really helps with ADD/ADHD and for flagging/low energy levels. Just be warned that these medications can cause dry mouth which can REALLY harm your teeth over time. If you're on any of these, either take to sipping water frequently or chew sugarless gum with Xylitol to help moisten your mouth with saliva. I wish someone had warned me and DH of this when we began being treated for out ADD & ADHD. Many crowns later, we know.

Hope this helps--good luck!
