For Women with ADHD ADD Who Want to Connect

Hi,
Just diagnosed and started Strattera today. Just wondering if anyone has had much success on it. My mental health psychologist recommended taking a stimulant, but my Dr wanted to try strattera, stating there isn't a stimulant FDA approved, which I'll check into myself. I don't mind a non stimulant if it helps. I just want what ever works best for "me".

So anyone having success with Strattera?

Thanks

I have been on Strattea but it didnt work for me. I started taking Wellbutrin last week and so far all it does for me is make me sleepy.

I tried Strattera, but it did nothing for me. Your doc said that "there isn't a stimulant FDA approved"? But isn't Ritalin a stimulant? And Adderall I KNOW is a stim. Also Dexedrine, which I take myself. These are all brandname ADD meds that have been on the market for a while, so I would think that they must be FDA approved.
People are all so different in their reactions to meds...one person's flop is another's success. It seems that you just have to keep trying them until you find one that works for you. Good luck!

I'm not happy with my Dr lying to me. It would be something different if I had a history of drug abuse. I have refused meds many of times, and used to even see a Naturapath for a while. I only take medication if absolutely needed. So I'm not happy with her stating that to me as if I wouldn't investigate on my own. I have some lab work to complete, and when I am done and results are in, I will be changing Drs all together. As for Strattera, I'll see how it works and make changes as needed.

The reason why you were not put on a stimulant is becuase one of the side efects is nervouseness. I'm not sure wh yyou have a mental health psychologist but maybe you should ask both doctors to meet and discuss your treatment together. I was told by pharmacist that Adderall could cause me to get hyper and that I should avoid caffeine. HA HA HA! My meds have caused me to calm down so much, even yawn frequently. That's why it's good to push the doctor to explain why he won't use a stimulant. Ask if you can do a one or two week trial.

My dr had me go to a mental health psychologist to do my ADHD evaluation. My dr is a PCP, and said she has not worked with many adults with ADHD. I personally decided to continue to work with the mental health counselor. The councelor reccommends the stimulant, especially since I do not have a history with abuse or addiction. This is my third day on strattera and so far only side affect is a headache in the evening. Only time will tell what will work best for me. I still plan to seek another dr, honesty is a must, along with knowing ALL the facts. She took away an option without even discussing it as a possibility then used the FDA to back her up. Poor practice for someone who isn't educated on adult ADHD. You can't just rule out treatment just because you personally have something against it. Just my opinion. I just want some that will present all the facts before deciding what's best for me, especially since I'm the one who has to live with it. Know what I mean?

Thanks for replying,
Andie

I was on Strattera for a couple weeks, and it increased my depression symptoms drastically, and I started again with suicidal thinking, even though I really had no reason to be that way. I had moderate to severe depression for several years, which now I see may have stemmed from not being able to cope with ADD symptoms because it never occured to anyone I may have an underlying cause!

Straterra does come with a warning of increased depression/suicidal thinking. After talking with a good friend also taking it (he is the one that basically made me realize that I have ADD) and also had a history with depression, I found he experienced the same thing.

So basically it did nothing for me except make me depressed for no real reason, so I quit before even been on it for 2 weeks. My stimulant works much better.

I have been on Strattera for the past week and it has done nothing for me. I am waiting to hear from my doctor to see about starting Ritalin or Adderall.

I had some success initially with Straterra but in the last 3 or 4 months (even with increased dosage) it doesn't seem to be as effective. I was afraid to try a stimulant, but now I'm willing and have an appointment with my psychiatrist this week. I'm also hoping to get a formal assessment by an educational psychologist to get ready for my doctoral work. Hope Straterra works for you! -Steph

Hi, I am new to the site. I started Strattera a few days ago, I don't feel any different. I have an appt this week to tell my phyciatrist. (not sure I spelled that correct). I feel I need to be on a stimulant. I was on Ritalin about 10 years ago, it worked well. The problem is that I told my Dr. that I had tried different drugs in the past, like cocaine. I guess that was the wrong this to say, but I figured he would find out via my primary. I don't do any of that stuff now, that was many, many, many years ago, in my partying years. I am 42 years old now with a 6 year old. Well I guess we will see what he says this week. I love this site, thanks to everyone. Michelle

Hi,

I don't think your doctor meant to lie. From what I understand the only FDA approved drug for the treatment of Adult ADD or ADHD is Strattea. That does not mean that you can not be given adderall or another stimulant only that they are not specifically FDA approved for treating adult ADD.

Hope that helps.

I started Strattera about a year ago after being diagnosed with ADHD. Worked amazing for the first several months, then just worked to calm the "I'm in a tornado" feeling inside my brain for then next several months. I felt tired all of the time, and the headaches were awful if I was late at all with my afternoon dose. Dry mouth was a bad side effect in the beginning and constipation. I was originally afraid to try a stimulant, but have taken myself off of Strattera 2 weeks ago and made an appt to try Ritalin. Hoping for relief. It doesn't appear to be the most effective drug according to everyone on this thread. But it IS a start.

Hi Jennifer,

Sahum here. I was wondering what med are you on now since you said it was working for you. You see, I was on Stratera also but it did not work for me. I was just diagnosed a couple of years ago. I was looking into Concerta, but it seems not too many people are on that yet. Please let me know if you don't mind telling.

Thanks
