I just joined.  Trying to figure out how to be a good mom with ADD.  Consistency is so good for kids but I can't be consistent. Is there some actual help on this site.

I'm brand new here, as well as to being dx'd with ADD.  I've been on meds about 4 months now.  I have three little boys ages 2, 4 and 6 and am constantly overwhelmed with life. I'm happy to have found this sight for support.

Trisha - I'm 45 and just diagnosed. My son is like your 9 year old. It got worse when he hit middle school. You have to fight to get the school to help. One thing I learned in CHADD is "pills don't make skills." A great quote that I have to keep reminding myself of. The meds help the brain function better, but don't teach skills that other kids the same age have already learned. Not only that, they have a developmental delay as much as 30%. The hardest part I've discovered is that the teachers think the kids are lazy because sometimes they CAN perform, so the teachers think they are lazy the rest of the time. Very aggravating!!!
I wish you luck. Stay up on here. We'll get thru with a little help from our friends.

I am a single mom with ADHD.  I was tested in my late 20's.  I have 2 daughters 11, 9 with AHDH.  My 9 year old is so smart, however her Attention holds her back, and even with medication she still does bad in school.  My 11 year old now makes A's since she has been on medication.  I don't like that our kids are like this, but it is good to know their are other parents that go thru what I go thru, and I'm not alone.

Hullo. Am Single Mom of 4 girls. They are 11, 6, 4, and 8 mos. Two oldest ones are ADHD of diff. types, and also oldest has Diabetes Type 1. The third child is getting special ed help in Early Childhood, though she's much much more developed than her sisters were. Don't know what its like to have a normal child. lol. One of the very few good things is that they stay my babies a lot longer. I am strained at the seams, even had to send the kitlings away when I reached ADD burnout the first time. No one understood, no one supported me, in fact they interfered and made things worse. I cannot work because of the kids [lost my job cuz of their constant illnesses]. Am working on alternate income, and just in survival mode "til things get better", but despite the girls getting older, nothing gets easier. Nothing gets better. Nothing develops. Will I drown forever? I hope I can find empathy here, but not too much sympathy. I have problems with self-pity. Thankyou.

Hi There. I have ADD and I have two girls 12 and 10. The 12 year old has PDD NOS- A mild form of Autism. I was diagnosed with ADD in 2001, but the Drs wouldn't put me on any medication for it. Then finally about a month ago, my psychatrist put me on 30mg of Dexedrine. I must say that I am struggling with a whole bunch of stuff like scheduling, organizing, getting things done on time..etc.. I'm sure you have all been there or already there. I am so happy I found a site like this. I really need alot of support because I don't really have anyone else to turn too but my kids.

Hello I have ADD and I am a single mom with two boys 3&5. I need advise on how to continue surviving. I'm making soooo many mistakes all the time and forgetting to do the most crucial things when it comes to my children. I've been diagnosed with ADD(finally someone believed me and agreed to testing me) but am unable to start medication for 2 or 3 more weeks. Truthfully don't know how much more I can take of this. Plz help!!
