How do you get and stay motivated to eat healthy and exercise? My intentions are always good, but after a few days of trying to stick with it, I go back to my old ways.
At the moment, I do not have a job (looking though) and my husband is very stressed between a job he hates and grad school. I keep going back to comfort foods even though I know better. I really want to lose 40 lbs but it's been so hard to stay on track.
One of the things that made a difference for me was not trying to change too much at once. Weight loss efforts fail because all of a sudden we try to change all of these things about ourselves. It's too much. It takes a long time to lose weight if you do it right, and when you are at the proper weight it will be because you have changed your lifestyle, not from dieting. Pick one thing to change and do it consistently for 4 weeks. It takes that long for something to become a habit. When that feels comfortable and easy, pick something else. If you are serious about losing weight, you won't try a quick fix, you'll slowly change. I am still picking one thing to change and working on that one thing four years after I started to really lose weight. Now it's more about adding healthy nutrients to my diet than to lose weight. Trying all the healthy food that I thought was nasty a long time ago. My new favorite is plain yogurt with fruit and flax seed. It's been a long slow road. I think one of the first things I chose was drinking a big glass of water every day because I was so unhealthy. And the second was buying frozen skinless chicken breasts and finding many different ways to cook it that were healthy. It doesn't sound like much, but I have been able to keep the weight off, mostly, for 2 years. I started to gain weight again this past year, and I started off slowly again. Change one thing at a time, and I am at a healthier weight now than I have ever been. My total weight loss from heaviest to now is 40 pounds.
